Charity, Justice, Advocacy, Presence

I've written about this before . The variety of appropriate ways in which we can respond to the needs of people on the margins. When we had our first planning meeting for the Drop In, it was the centrepiece of our discussion as we talked it through and expanded on the idea. Different team members could identify with different roles. This week, we got to see how it all fits together in a concrete way. What it means: Charity: I have more than I need, I give some to someone who has less than they need. Justice: I see that a system is unfair or corrupt so I take action to push back against it by picketing the MPPs office, finding a loophole, or running for office. Advocacy: Standing up for someone or speaking up for them in a way that they are unable to speak for themselves. Presence: Being a friend, accepting hospitality, doing life together. Drop-In Report Six Months Along

July 18/2023 Drop In Ministry Report Having just passed the six-month mark in this ministry, it’s interesting and encouraging to look back over that short time to see how God has been working in and through people. The core team providing structure and leadership to the ministry continues to be P.N. (Anglican), E.C. (Evangelical Missionary), A. L. (Community Church), and myself (Baptist). We work well together and have complementary gift-sets that create a good environment that comprises a mix of hospitality, provision, and assistance. Part of our hospitality includes laying a table of breakfast foods including fresh fruit (bananas and oranges), often not available through food banks. Several guests have appreciated a hot breakfast of instant oatmeal. Now that the garden is up and running, we’ve been able to hand people lettuce, tomatoes, and zucchinis. I Was Bored In a Small Town...

(Apologies to John Cougar Mellencamp.) Things are different right now from a year ago . Late 2022, our unsheltered friends in town were provided with motel rooms in the town next door. The local cops provided transportation and the rooms are funded by the county's only shelter. That means that, as far as I know, no one is living out in the cold in our little town. Not sure how long the rooms are funded for, but every night is a night not out there. I've written before about the challenges of life with the shelter. There are many people for whom it just really really doesn't work. Like my friend Enola. Even though she has some distance from the actual shelter house, I hope she can stick it out until the spring. When she was out in the cold, she was daily fighting to survive. Every day she built and maintained a fire on which she cooked the food that she'd hauled from the foodbank.
