Glory, Glory, Hallelujah

Small crowd at church today, but enthusiastic. My musical education continues. It turns out that Desperado makes a really good 'call to worship'.

12 year old Y. dropped in to church long enough to request Lean On Me. We sang it together and she headed back out into the sunshine, some of which she'd brought in with her. She's a bright and wonderful young woman. It's been commented that if she can thrive at GTI, imagine what she could be somewhere else.

Yard sale donations are trickling in. We've started a pile in a corner of the old kitchen (being careful to keep it separate from B.'s things that are still there waiting to be picked up by a relative.) A couple of local musicians have agreed to come be live music, so it's coming together.

Walking into the Sherwood Room (where all this happens) this morning, I crossed paths with T. carrying a large box of onions. These were donated several months ago by someone. People have been taking a few here and there, but there's only so much you can do with onions if you have no stove. They've gone past the point where anyone would want to eat them, and the box is full of green sprouts that want to make something of themselves, so C.L., who looks after the Room and makes the coffee and holds the keys, decided to plant them and see what happens.

Which is great for T. and some others who have very little to do. They've been working on landscaping the property a bit, cleaning up last year's shrubs (the manager has been at great pains to establish "I'm not paying you for this, you know!"). So now there are spots for the onions, and the berry bushes at the base of the tower can get some sunlight.

R. was there this morning. He often goes with the motel's manager to a church north of town. R. says that his main reason for going is to get the drive in the country and to see the fields and the sky. This is a man who is rediscovering the world after being drunk for years. He's been sober for 4 1/2 months and we're all hugely proud of him. Since then, his wit has been emerging and he often makes us laugh (he did before, too, but that was different). We talked a bit on Wednesday night about how we're finally getting to know the real him and how much we're enjoying it.

Hope, hope, hope.

Hallelujah.
