For those of you caught up in the gripping urgency of our "to grace or not to grace" debate (previous post), I offer the following...
Today, being Tuesday, I went to lunch at the soup kitchen. Today, being the last Tuesday before we're up to our necks in Christmas, was a turkey dinner. Very tasty.
They start serving at 11:30. E. and I arrived at about 11:40 and there were around a dozen people there ahead of us. DC, who used to live at the Motel, had saved us a couple of seats and we got our plates and sat down.
About 5 minutes later, the number of people in the room had more than doubled.
DC thought that was really strange. Why would everybody come late? People usually get there a little early. Especially for a real turkey dinner. There was no worry that they might run out of meat(?)loaf sandwiches and soup, but this was a second and third helping kind of thing.
Then she said: Oh, I know why they're all coming late!
Me: Why?
DC: So they miss the prayer.
Me: He said a prayer?
DC: Yeah. Well... (she thought for a second) he said "amen." He talked about Jesus and Christmas, but it was a lot of big words and I didn't get it.
Me: We used to get a lot of people come late for Dinner on Wednesdays. Now they come early. Maybe they figured out we don't have a prayer at the start.
DC: Well, yeah.
After that the conversation evolved to include phrases like "ten toes up and ten toes down."
Which is a topic for another day.
Or not.

PS to the addendum: There's more of this debate on my husband's blog. You can find it here.
